THE boss of a Three Towns charity set up to help people struggling to cope with the cost-of-living crisis says a "devastating" attack by vandals has left its future in doubt.

Yobs smashed more than a dozen windows at the West Coast Furniture Bank in Stevenston and damaged a vehicle in the mindless attack on the evening of Friday, June 7.

Footage of the incident, at the charity's base in First Avenue, was captured on CCTV cameras.

But charity boss George McMahon says the cost of repairing the windows which were broken at the property will run to thousands of pounds.

And he appealed for help from residents and local businesses to allow the charity to keep going.

George, who was one of just three North Ayrshire residents who received a platinum champions award from the Queen to mark her 70th year on the throne, warned the latest bout of vandalism could cripple the charity.

He added: "We could be snookered by this."

The West Coast Furniture Bank SCIO provides household items free of charge to those in need upon referral from local partner agencies, including social services, housing, homelessness, the NHS, the DWP and Women’s Aid.

The charity picks up good quality unwanted household items free of charge and distributes and recycles more than 95 per cent of the collected items free of charge.

They also distribute donations of food from local stores to people who are struggling to cope with the rising cost of everyday essentials.

The charity has been in existence for more than 17 years and has helped more than 10,000 families, mostly in North Ayrshire during that time.

Last year alone, 1,500 families in North Ayrshire were supported by its work.

George said: "Even before this vandalism, the roof needed repairs. We have been doing bits and pieces to keep us afloat.

"If there are any companies or individuals out there who could help us put up gates at the front, that would be ideal."

If anyone has information about the vandalism please contact Police Scotland by calling 101.
