Police officers responding to a report of an assault in Kilmarnock discovered a fire near the scene on Monday night. 

Officers were called to the initial incident in Marchdyke Crescent around 8pm, with investigations into the assault continuing. 

They were then alerted by fire services to a blaze in a nearby property and assisted firefighters with the emergency incident.  

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Officers were called to a report of an assault in the Marchdyke Crescent area of Kilmarnock around 7.55pm on Monday October 9.

“Enquiries into the incident remain ongoing.

“Whilst at the scene, officers came across a small fire at a property and assisted our colleagues from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

"There is not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."
