A plan has been revealed to turn a major Kilmarnock road back into a two-way street for traffic.

Councillor Graham Boyd, for Kilmarnock East and Hurlford, has confirmed that studies are underway to remove the one-way system from Green Street in the town centre.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance is currently monitoring traffic flow in the area, with a view to restructuring the roads past the bus station, Palace Theatre and other major sites.

Councillor Boyd explained: "In recent months you may have noticed small boxes above traffic lights in Kilmarnock.

"Ayrshire Roads Alliance have been monitoring traffic flow around and in and out of the town centre.

"After New Year, using the results, a study will be undertaken with the hope of changing Green Street, from the viaduct all the way to where Sturrock Street meets Fowlds Street, back to two-way traffic, as it was pre 1976.

"I’m very much in favour of this.

"The one way system here at present strangles the town centre, in particular around the Palace Theatre.

"It’s said one way systems make traffic travel at twice the speed but take twice as long to get there."
