An Ayrshire sporting hero was celebrated at a glittering ceremony after being inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

Julie Fleeting, 42, won 17 major trophies at the pinnacle of the women's game with Arsenal, after starting out with local teams in her native Ayrshire.

The striker, now retired, holds the national record of 116 goals for her country, and won 121 caps for Scotland between 1996 and 2015.

She was made an MBE in 2008, and was the first Scot to play as a full-time professional in the US women's game, turning out for San Diego Spirit.

Born in Kilwinning in 1980, Fleeting played for Cunninghame Boys Club and Crosshouse Boys Club before making the step up to Ayr United Ladies.

Across a glittering career, she starred for Ross County, Arsenal, Valur, Celtic and her native Kilwinning.

She currently works as a PE teacher at Auchenharvie Academy in Stevenston, and appears as a pundit on television.

Julie's dad, Jim, is currently the SFA's director of football development, while her uncle, Bobby Fleeting, is a former owner of Kilmarnock FC - where Jim spent three years as manager from 1989-1992.

Her brother Barry oversees Inverclyde National Sports Centre in Largs.

The Scottish Sports Hall of Fame was established by sportscotland in 2002 to recognise and honour the great champions the country has produced, with 101 inductees so far.

Mel Young, chair of sportscotland, said: “I am delighted that  Julie Fleeting has been recognised for her exceptional achievements and inducted into the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame.

“Throughout her career Julie has been a trailblazer for her sport and has represented the very best of Scottish sport on the world stage."
